Principles of Harmonic Drive®
Our History
1957   The basic principle of the "Harmonic Drive" was introduced by C.W. Musser, an American inventor.
1964   Harmonic Drive was successfully put into practical use by Hasegawa Gear Works, Ltd., the predecessor to the present Harmonic Drive Systems Inc.,and USM Co., Ltd. in the U.S.
1970 October Established Harmonic Drive Systems Inc. in Tokyo, Japan as a joint venture between Hasegawa Gear Works, Ltd. and USM Co., Ltd.
Harmonic Drive Systems Inc. obtained business rights to Harmonic Drive mechanisms from Hasegawa Gear Works, Ltd. through its technical cooperation agreement with USM Co., Ltd..


  November • Started manufacturing Harmonic Drive speed reducers at the Matsumoto Plant in Nagano, Japan.


• Concluded a non-exclusive agency agreement with Mitsui & Co., Ltd.
1976 September Capital reduced to ¥100 million and the company became a wholly-owned subsidiary of USM Co., Ltd.
1977 November Started manufacturing and selling factory automation equipment such as actuators and controllers.
1980 November Concluded a distributorship agreement with Mitsui & Co., Ltd. for sales of Harmonic Drive Systems Inc. products in Japan - the agency agreement was terminated.
1984 December Established sales agents in Taiwan and Korea for market development.
1987 February Established subsidiary company HD Systems, Inc. for expanding into the U.S. market.
  April Concluded a distributorship agreement with Mitsui & Co., Ltd. for sales of Harmonic Drive Systems Inc. products in Korea.
1988 June Started manufacturing and selling Harmonic Drive speed reducers with the newly-developed IH tooth profile.
1989 February Established "new" Harmonic Drive Systems Inc. as a wholly-owned subsidiary of "former" Harmonic Drive Systems Inc.
  March Transferred business from "former" Harmonic Drive Systems Inc. to "new" Harmonic Drive Systems Inc.
  April "Former" Harmonic Drive Systems Inc. was taken over by Koden Electronics Co., Ltd.
1990 December Completed the Hotaka Plant in Hotaka-machi, Nagano, Japan.
Moved production base from the Matsumoto Plant to the Hotaka Plant.
1996 March Concluded an exclusive distributorship agreement with Harmonic Drive Antriebstechnik GmbH, the current Harmonic Drive AG, in Germany for sales of Harmonic Drive Systems Inc. products in Europe, the Middle East, Africa, India and Latin America.
  December Concluded a license and technical support agreement with Harmonic Drive Antriebstechnik GmbH.
1998 March Listed on the Japan Securities Dealers Association over-the-counter market.
1999 April Established subsidiary HD Logistics, Inc.
  July Established subsidiary Harmonic Precision, Inc.
2002 July Acquired 25% issued shares in Harmonic Drive AG.
2003 April Established subsidiary Harmonic AD, Inc.
2004 December Listed on Jasdaq Securities Exchange, Inc.
2005 December Established subsidiary Harmonic Drive L.L.C. in the U.S. as a joint venture between HD Systems, Inc. and Harmonic Drive Technologies Nabtesco Inc.
